Why Walk Kennedy Town?
Kennedy Town doesn't have the crush of Central or the frenetic energy of Mong Kok. What it has instead is space—physical and psychological. The streets are wider, the foot traffic less intense, and the buildings mostly residential rather than commercial. It's a neighborhood where you can actually walk without constantly calculating the next few steps. The MTR extension that opened the area to better connectivity has brought change, but the core of Kennedy Town remains neighborhood-focused rather than destination-focused.
The real draw is the waterfront. Kennedy Town has access to Victoria Harbour in ways that other Island neighborhoods don't, with promenades and quiet spots where you can see across the water to Kowloon. Walk the streets heading downslope toward the water and you're moving through layers of discovery—busy shopping streets transitioning to quieter residential, finally arriving at the waterfront where the pace drops to nothing.
The Best Streets to Walk
These streets form the core of Kennedy Town's character, from the neighborhood heart to the waterfront:
- Des Voeux Road West
- Kennedy Road
- Belcher's Street
- High Street
- Cadiz Street
- Third Street
- Second Street
- First Street
What You'll Discover
Des Voeux Road West runs like a spine through Kennedy Town, a shopping street that's busy but not chaotic. The street is lined with dai pai dong, pharmacies, seafood restaurants, and small shops serving neighborhood residents. Walk it and you're seeing Hong Kong's daily life—people buying groceries, meeting friends, living their ordinary lives. The street has character but zero affectation.
Head downslope on Kennedy Road or Belcher's Street and the neighborhood shifts. The incline reveals views across the harbor, the density loosens, and you arrive at the waterfront where promenades replace streets. Walk along the water and take in the perspective of Hong Kong from the edge rather than the center. The contrast between the bustling streets above and the peaceful waterfront below is Kennedy Town's defining tension.

The complete circuit is roughly 2.3 kilometers and shows you all of Kennedy Town's distinct layers.

Take the MTR to Kennedy Town station on the Red Line, the current western terminus of the line. The station opened in 2015 and is Kennedy Town's primary transit hub. Kennedy Town sits on Hong Kong Island's northwestern tip, adjacent to Sai Ying Pun to the east.
Best Time to Walk
Kennedy Town is pleasant year-round, but the waterfront stretches are best enjoyed during cooler months (November-February) when you can walk the promenades without the intensity of summer heat and humidity. Mornings are quiet, afternoons bring more foot traffic, evenings offer harbor-side walks with sunset views. Avoid typhoon season (June-September) when waterfront walks may be restricted.
Nearby Neighborhoods
Head east to Sai Ying Pun for more steeply inclined streets and older residential character. Continue toward Tai Hang and the rest of Hong Kong Island's urban core. The harbor itself offers a different perspective on the city's geography.
