Walking Richmond

Slower paced than Division. More understated than Alberta. Richmond Avenue is where Portland neighborhoods still feel like neighborhoods—quiet blocks with depth, local institutions that know their regulars.

Why Walk Richmond?

Richmond Avenue exists in the space between Portland's trendiest neighborhoods and its purely residential areas. It hasn't been overrun by development or gentrification, which means it still feels like a place where people actually live and shop rather than a destination district. The businesses here exist because neighbors need them, not because developers identified a market opportunity. That difference matters. It changes how a neighborhood feels and what you discover when walking it.

For explorers tired of Portland's more famous neighborhoods, Richmond offers something genuinely local. The businesses change slowly—some have been in place for decades. The foot traffic is steady but never overwhelming. You can actually hear yourself think and notice details: the way buildings are maintained, the character of older architecture, how streetscapes reveal neighborhood history. This is Portland before it became a destination, and there's real value in that.

The Best Streets to Walk

Richmond Avenue itself is the spine, but exploring the neighborhood fully means walking the cross streets and understanding how the commercial district connects to the residential areas surrounding it. These streets together create Richmond's essential character.

What You'll Discover

Richmond's discoveries are often quiet ones. A bookstore that's been family-operated for two decades. A Thai restaurant that gets its regulars and doesn't need broader acclaim. A coffee shop where the barista remembers your order. These aren't Instagram-worthy destinations—they're just good places where real community happens. Walking Richmond means slowing your pace enough to notice these things, to understand that not every neighborhood discovery needs to be novel or trending.

The neighborhood also reveals Portland's residential character more clearly than busier areas. Walk the blocks immediately east and west of Richmond Avenue to see where people actually live, notice the housing stock and architectural details, understand how the commercial street relates to the community it serves. This contextual walking reveals much more about how a city actually functions than focusing purely on retail and restaurants.

Walking Routes

Start at SE Richmond and 32nd Avenue, walking east along Richmond toward 40th Avenue. The core commercial section spans roughly 1.2 miles. Detour north on 34th or 35th Avenue to explore residential blocks and experience the transition from commercial to purely residential. A complete exploratory loop takes about 2 miles and works well as a 45-minute walk with time to stop and look around.

Getting There

TriMet's 14 bus runs along Richmond Avenue, providing direct access from downtown Portland and connecting to the broader transit network. The neighborhood is car-accessible via SE Hawthorne Boulevard and SE Division Street, both of which feed into Richmond. Street parking is plentiful and easy—one of the advantages of a less-crowded neighborhood.

Best Time to Walk

Richmond works beautifully during the day when you can see inside shops and notice neighborhood details. The quieter pace makes it ideal for contemplative walks where you're observing rather than experiencing high-energy street life. Spring and fall offer ideal weather, but the neighborhood is walkable year-round. Late afternoon walks offer pleasant light without the peak foot traffic of busier neighborhoods.

Nearby Neighborhoods

East on SE Hawthorne Boulevard leads to the more prominent Hawthorne District with its own distinct character. North toward the Willamette River connects to Division Street, one of Portland's most energetic neighborhoods. South explores more residential Southeast Portland with its own charm. Each direction offers a different pace and vibe.
