Walking Smichov

Smichov is Prague's post-industrial neighborhood, where factories have become apartments and galleries, where the Vltava River provides green space and leisure access. The streets show layered transformation—industrial heritage, residential adaptation, and contemporary re-use happening simultaneously within the same blocks.

Why Walk Smichov?

Unlike gentrified neighborhoods that erase their industrial past, Smichov preserves the visible infrastructure of what it was. Factory buildings frame residential streets. The river's working history—locks, embankments, industrial ports—remains visible. The neighborhood is transforming, but not by forgetting its origin. New galleries and cafes occupy old industrial spaces, creating a palimpsest where multiple histories remain simultaneously visible. Walking Smichov reveals how neighborhoods can honor their past without being imprisoned by it.

The river access also changes the walking experience. Unlike most Prague neighborhoods, Smichov offers genuine water adjacency and the green spaces that come with it, giving the district a different spatial logic and sense of openness.

The Best Streets to Walk

These streets reveal Smichov's industrial heritage and contemporary transformation.

What You'll Discover

Begin at Anděl, the neighborhood's main plaza and commercial heart. The plaza's centerpiece is the Palladium shopping center, a post-communist development that anchors this district. But walk through the surrounding streets—Nádražní, Václavova—and you'll find the neighborhood's actual transformation happening in smaller buildings. Former factories become residential lofts. Ground-floor industrial spaces become cafes and galleries. Continue toward the riverbank on Vltavská and Nadolní, where the Vltava provides green space and the riverside promenade offers a completely different character—quiet, tree-lined, offering respite from the street activity.

Walking Routes

Start at Anděl plaza and walk the surrounding commercial district (800m). Continue through residential-industrial blocks via Nádražní and Václavova (1.1km). Walk toward the riverside via Staňkova, exploring the converted industrial sites (900m). Follow Nadolní along the Vltava's eastern bank (1.2km). Return inland through quieter residential streets like Bertramka (1km). This 5km loop captures Smichov's full spectrum—commercial center, post-industrial adaptation, river access, and transformed industrial heritage.
